Emden is a village of about 465 people in Logan County, Illinois, 17.7 road miles and about 24 minutes northwest of Lincoln. It took its name from Emden, Germany, because so many of the families who settled here had come from villages along the River Ems, and the Emden Star was printing the local news by 1893.

Today the Rail Splitter Wind Farm is centered on the village, and the turbines on the fields around it tell you what the trees already know: this is open, flat ground with nothing to slow a thunderstorm or an ice storm coming across the prairie.
