Middletown is a village of about 330 people in Logan County, Illinois, 18.7 road miles and about 36 minutes southwest of Lincoln on the county roads near Salt Creek. Founded in 1832, it is the oldest town in the county; Abraham Lincoln surveyed the site in his early surveying days, and the Stage Coach Inn off the square, where he is believed to have stayed, is the oldest wooden building of its kind in Illinois.

The Knapp building, home of the library and museum, is the oldest brick building in Logan County, and the Vin Fiz, the first flight across the country, stopped here.
