Mason City, IL: Route 10's West End

Mason City is a city of about 2,080 people in eastern Mason County, Illinois, 19.6 road miles and about 32 minutes west of Lincoln, where Illinois Route 10 comes into town as Chestnut Street. It was established in 1857 and took its name from the county, and the city drains south toward Salt Creek, the same west-flowing creek that passes Lincoln.

Mason City is the biggest place on our west run, with real town blocks: big silver maples, sugar maples, hackberries and pin oaks over the houses, Bradford pears and blue spruce in the newer yards, and the dead ash the borer left on nearly every street. West of the Logan County line the ground turns sandier; stumps grind fast and clean, but the silver maples and cottonwoods root wide and shallow and lift in a wet June storm.
