Tree Removal After the 2024 Tornado in Latham, IL

Latham is a village of about 335 people in southeastern Logan County, Illinois, 19.2 road miles and about 30 minutes southeast of Lincoln, with Illinois Route 121 wrapping its north and east sides and leading seven miles northwest to Mount Pulaski. It was platted in 1871 and named for Robert B. Latham, a railroad official, and the post office has been open since 1872.

Latham is also the most recent tornado on our list: on April 18, 2024 an EF1 crossed the village and snapped ten trees, and we spent that spring hauling the pieces. The trees it hit were the ones every Latham yard has, silver maples and Bradford pears with weak wood, and the ones it spared, sugar maples, white oaks and black walnuts, now carry cracked leaders and hangers that show up a year or two later. The fence rows are Osage orange and dead ash.
