McLean is a village of about 740 people in McLean County, Illinois, 16.9 road miles and about 23 minutes northeast of Lincoln, where I-55 passes the east side of the village at exit 145 and U.S. 136, the Dixie Road, runs along the south edge of the village center; the interstate leads 16 miles back southwest to Lincoln, one of our quickest runs for the miles.

Franklin Price laid out McLean on June 22, 1855 as the Alton railroad was first built through the county, the village incorporated in 1866, and the Dixie Travel Plaza is still the landmark drivers know. The village blocks carry big silver maples, sugar maples and hackberries planted a generation or two ago, now over roofs and service drops, with Bradford pears that split in every ice storm and the dead ash the borer left. Farmsteads along 136 have Scotch pine and blue spruce windbreaks going thin.
