Delavan, IL: The Far End of Our Run

Delavan is a city of about 1,570 people in Tazewell County, Illinois, 25.1 road miles and about 34 minutes northwest of Lincoln, the farthest place we serve. A post office has been open here since 1840, and the city takes its name from Edward C. Delavan, a temperance advocate.

It is prairie town blocks in every direction: big silver maples, sugar maples, hackberries and black walnuts over the older houses and the service drops, Bradford pears and honeylocusts in the newer yards, dead ash on nearly every block, and the farmsteads around town ringed with Scotch pine and blue spruce windbreaks planted against exactly the derechos and ice storms that still cross this ground.
