Waynesville is a village of about 380 people in DeWitt County, Illinois, 17.9 road miles and about 31 minutes east of Lincoln. Prettyman and Rebecca Marvel settled the ground around 1825, the first plat was filed in 1832 with the name chosen for the Revolutionary War general Anthony Wayne, and the settlement grew up about a mile south of Kickapoo Creek, the same creek that runs on past Lincoln and through Kickapoo Creek Park.

The village reached about 500 people within a few decades and has stayed close to that ever since, so the trees are old ones: sugar maples, white oaks and black walnuts that have shaded the same lots for generations, standing over roofs and service drops. The creek bottom north of town is sycamore, cottonwood, silver maple and willow in soft ground, and the fence rows are Osage orange. Waynesville is our first DeWitt County stop, on the way to Clinton and Kenney.
