Tree Removal Under the Hill in Elkhart, IL

Elkhart is a village of about 450 people in Logan County, Illinois, 12.5 road miles and about 23 minutes south of Lincoln on old Route 66, with I-55 passing its northwest side at exit 115. Elkhart Hill rises to 771 feet in the southeast part of the village, well above the town, and the grove on it is where James Latham settled in the spring of 1819; the name comes from the grove's shape, said to resemble an elk's heart.

John Shockey laid out the town in 1855, John D. Gillett's stock farms made it one of the biggest shipping points on the Chicago & Alton, and Governor Richard Oglesby died in his home here in 1899. The hill is the tree work: old white oak, bur oak, black walnut and sugar maple on the slope, hackberry and honeylocust on the village lots below. On May 9, 1995 an F3 tornado ran 40 miles through here.
